On the Java platform, a Manifest file is a specific file contained within a JAR archive. It is used to define extension and package-related data. It is a metadata file that contains name-value pairs organized in different sections. From the manifest file you can know the version and the vendor of the java implementation on top of which this manifest file is generated, the signature version of the jar file, the relative URLs of the extensions or libraries that this application or extension needs, the relative path of the main application class which the launcher will load at startup time in case the Jar is executable, and many other information.
